Our Story
The Sanfilippo family. Sunfarm founder, Sam sits in the front row on the left.
The Sanfilippo family business started over three generations ago in Trappeto, Sicily, and now encompasses over 90 years of experience. The Sanfilippo family first took root in the produce business as lemon tree farmers in Italy and learned from the ground up that hard work and dedication pay off to achieve the finest product grown. Salvatore Sanfilippo immigrated to the United States in 1923 and carried on his family tradition through supplying fresh produce at Soulard Market in Downtown St. Louis. After working for his father for many years and after several years as produce manager for Schnucks, Sam branched off on his own and bought a grocery store next to Soulard Market named Anthony's Produce. Sam ran Anthony's as both a retailer and a wholesaler of fine produce. In 1983 Sunfarm Food Service was born when we relocated our produce company to Produce Row and dedicated ourselves as a business to business distributor of fruits, vegetables and dairy to fine restaurants and institutions in the St. Louis Area. Sam, his daughters Amy and Beth, and the rest of the Sunfarm Team have grown Sunfarm into the solid company it is today. Sunfarm Food Service continues to expand to meet our customer's ever growing needs by offering standard, local, and organic produce & dairy from the best brands and growers around the globe and around the corner.
Our Team
Our business has grown because of its extraordinary service and respect for our customers. We appreciate your business and will strive to meet your every expectation.
Produce Sommeliers
Each Sunfarm customer has a committed sales representative or 'produce sommelier' that is familiar with your special needs. These representatives work with our three buyers to make sure that your needs are represented at the produce marketplace. To prevent shortages, we have established a network with other distributors on Produce Row. Additionally, we have unique relationships with our vendors to protect our customers during growing gaps and we are frequently able to find that "hard to find" item.
